Bea glanced at the time. Eight o’clock. She wondered how the rest of Clay’s date with Jess had gone. Perhaps it was still going.

Moving to the window, she glanced at the street dance in full swing below. After Clay had left to go find Jess, she’d spent time soaking in the post-race excitement before heading back to her apartment.

She didn’t have to work, but she did want to review the figures she and Prim had discussed. So, instead of having dinner with Piper, who was still feeling ill, she grabbed her tablet and headed to the library and another private spot she knew where she could study the figures and not be disturbed.

Even after she checked on Piper, then returned to her apartment, she couldn’t settle. Bea couldn’t stop thinking about the feel of Clay’s lips beneath her fingertips. His mouth had been so close to hers, only an inch away before…

Didn’t matter, she told herself. She should be happy the girls had arrived. How awkward would it have been if he’d kissed her?

Very awkward, she assured herself.

The problem was, she couldn’t still the ache of longing that rose up at the memory. Today had probably been her only chance to kiss him.

Gladys would continue to toss women at him until one of them stuck. Perhaps even Jess…

She chuckled, recalling his comment about how young she was…and how old they were.

Illustrated by the fact that she was in her apartment alone rather than dancing in the street.

Spurred by the thought, Bea checked the temperature on her phone. Still warm enough for the dress she had in mind.

Bea paired the brilliant blue dress with the cowboy boots her sister gave her last Christmas. When she’d gotten home after the run, she’d showered and washed her hair, so it didn’t look like it’d been pulled into a tail and stuffed into a ball cap.

Reflecting once again on Clay’s aging comment, Bea took several minutes to put on makeup. The eye shadow, another gift from Britt, had her eyes popping.

After adding color to her lips, she spritzed on a tiny bit of perfume, dropped her key into a bag barely big enough to hold her keys, money and phone, then scampered down the steps.

Old indeed. She snorted. There was still a lot of life left in this old girl.

Tonight, well, tonight she would party like she was twenty-one.
